Parrot Adoption
Please take a moment to read the Reasons People Give Up Their
Parrots. You might be surprised at how many well meaning animal
lovers give up their pet birds. If you can see yourself in the lines
that follow, you may want to re-examine your choice of a parrot as a
companion animal. Our goal is to find permanent homes for these birds
and, thus, stop the bouncing of parrots from home to home because this
causes great stress for the parrots. We try to find homes that will be
able to keep and provide attention and love to the parrot for the rest
of it's life.
Reasons People Give Up Their Parrots
-
I didn't think they
would be this noisy (or messy or demanding)
-
My allergies got too bad
-
My bird attacks my
boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/children/dog/cat, etc.
-
We had a baby
-
We moved into a condo
(or apartment, etc.) and can't keep him
-
I work all day and he's
lonely. When I come home at night and need some time to myself, he
just screams at me for hours
-
He's starting to pluck
his feathers (bite people, self mutilate, etc.)
Many people have unrealistic
ideas about what sharing their life with a parrot will be like. The
Busch Gardens Parrots are happy, well-adjusted birds because they are
interacting with people and other birds all day long. Parrots are very
social animals and they need companionship. Often people get a parrot,
put it in a cage for 8 hours a day while they are at work and, after a
while, the parrot develops serious behavioral problems. This is not a
good life for any animal, but especially not for an animal as
intelligent and social as a parrot. We try to adopt out parrots in twos
or adopt to people who already own a few parrots. We also prefer to
adopt out birds to people who work or spend a fair amount of time at
home.
After reviewing the Adoption
Requirements and Reasons People Give Up Their Parrots and asking
yourself if you are willing to make a real commitment to a parrot in
need, fill out the Adoption Application and mail it along with the
non-refundable $25.00 donation to Foster Parrots, Ltd. Please realize
that this does not ensure that an adoption will take place, but it is
required in all adoptions. The money will go towards food and toys for
the parrots who make their home with us.
