VOLUNTEERING AT THE NEW ENGLAND EXOTIC WILDLIFE SANCTUARY The New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary is always in need of volunteers! Prior experience with parrots and/or other exotics is helpful but not necessary. What is necessary is a love and respect for animals, a willingness to learn and the ability to make a commitment. Because parrot rescue organizations do not benefit from the same level of funding and support that dog and cat shelters enjoy, our paid staff is very small and we rely heavily on volunteer help. Our volunteers work hard! And because of the complex nature of these intelligent, wild animals, we invest a great deal of time in training our volunteer staff. For this reason we are not able to accept “casual” help. Volunteers must be over the age of 18. We ask that volunteers make a commitment to at least one day per week for a minimum of three months, or 12 consecutive shifts. Once the 3 month commitment is fulfilled, volunteers may walk away or choose to continue volunteering at the sanctuary. Most of our volunteers stay on indefinitely, becoming part of a close family of Foster Parrots people! Once trained, volunteers must have the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. All volunteer shifts begin at 9:00a.m. and last 4 - 5 hours. Volunteer work at the sanctuary consists of providing fresh food and water for the birds and animals, cleaning cages, scraping poop, shucking out large aviaries, sweeping floors, prepping food, washing dishes, seasonal yard work... and forming respectful and compassionate relationships with the animals we care for.
