Foster Parrots joins JGI
in Day of Peace
celebrations
by Marc Johnson

Many of
you know
of
Foster
Parrots'
efforts
in
Guyana
to
preserve
as much
rainforest
as
possible,
but a
new
effort
has been
initiated
that
will
bring
the next
generation
of
Guyanese
into
play.
Foster
Parrots,
under
the
guidance
of
Shirley
Melville,
Member
of
Parliament
for the
Rupununi
Region
of
Central
Guyana,
has
joined
with the
efforts
of
The Jane
Goodall
Institute's
Roots
and
Shoots
Program.
This
innovative
and
important
program
relies
on the
grassroots
efforts
of
children
to
change
their
world's
future
through
their
participation
in their
own
communities
and by
helping
the less
fortunate
children
in
countries
where
all the
things
we take
for
granted
are
considered
luxuries.
School
supplies,
chairs
and
sometimes
even the
school
buildings
themselves
are
non-existent.
Through
the
fundraising
efforts
of
children
here in
America
some of
these
can be
provided,
thus
offering
others
the
chance
to gain
the
education
that
will
improve
life for
all in
these
communities.
The
Roots
and
Shoots
Program
also
encourages
a
greater
appreciation
for the
fragile
ecosystems
in which
these
children
live and
offers
assistance
needed
to
preserve
and
restore
our
world's
eco-treasures.
Foster
Parrots
is proud
to
sponsor
this
year's
JGI Day
of Peace
celebrations
in the
village
of Nappi,
Guyana,

September
24,
2005. We
will be
posting
an
update
with
photos
of this
milestone
in our
October
newsletter,
The
Flying
Monkey.
We are
also
proud to
announce
the
beginning
of a new
traveling
education
program.
With the
help of
the
World
Parrot
Trust
and
In
Defense
of
Animals
a
secondhand
Land
Rover
will be
outfitted
with a
TV, DVD
player
and a
generator.
We will
begin to
visit
some of
the more
remote
villages
with the
message
of
conservation
and of
the
eco-tourism
venture
now
being
established
in Nappi
Village.
Foster
Parrots
has,
through
the kind
donations
of its
devoted
members,
helped
the
village
to
establish
an
eco-tourism
business
complete
with
lodging
for 8 in
exchange
for the
village's
pledge
to end
the
hunting
of all
wildlife
for the
export
trade
and
protection
of the
fragile
forests
around
them
from
logging.
As the
protection
of these
natural
resources
is vital
to a
thriving
eco-tourism
effort,
Nappi
Village
is well
aware of
the need
to be
able to
have
something
to show
those
who
visit
their
beautiful
home.
The
production
of a
film
that
will be
shown in
the many
neighboring
villages
as well
as those
far
afield
will
play an
important
role in
this
effort.
This
film
will
also
serve to
educate
and
enlighten
the
schools
here in
America
to the
efforts
of the
Guyanese
to
preserve
their
lands
and
hopefully
encourage
our
students
here to
participate
in the
generation
of funds
that
will
show our
support
for the
children
in the
Rupununi.
We hope
that you
will all
stay
tuned
for the
many
exciting
developments
to come
and that
you too
will
participate
in the
efforts
of the
Roots
and
Shoots
Program
by
initiating
conservation
projects
in your
communities
and
perhaps
by
holding
a bake
sale or
can
drive
help the
children
in
Guyana
get the
education
that
will
give
them the
knowledge
to save
their
heritage
and
forests
through
eco-tourism
and
conservation. |
