Our Placement Programs:

Traditional Guardianship

The Traditional Guardianship program matches caretakers with birds that are human-bonded and accustomed to life in a home setting. These birds rely on humans for social support and require a high level of attention. This program was formerly referred to as the Foster Parrots adoption program.

The Home Sanctuary program brings sanctuary-mindset care into the home setting and helps create a greater placement network for birds in need. These birds may struggle in a traditional adoption program due to flock size, behavioral issues, and medical needs.

Requirements for All Placements

Applicants do not have to be “experts” but they do have to be empathetic, compassionate, and willing to learn.

There must be no other potentially dangerous or predatory animals in the home. We will not place birds in homes with ferrets.

There must be no non-stick cookware in the home.

Must not smoke or vape within the home.

We will not place parrots with breeders or with people who will allow the breeding of any species

We will not place large species of parrots or highly vocal parrots with those that reside in a rental property or with shared walls.

Guardian homes must have the ability to limit enclosure time and provide exceptional social support. We will not place birds into homes in which they will spend the majority of their time confined to a cage. 1-3 hours a day of out of cage time is simply not enough.

Guardian homes must be financially stable and have the ability to provide veterinary care, an appropriate and nutritious diet, housing, toys, and enrichments.

Guardian homes must provide annual vet care, well visits, and have access to emergency services for their placed bird.

Birds placed through Foster Parrots shall be returned to Foster Parrots when the guardian is no longer able to care for them.

Our placement fee is $200.00 to help cover costs associated with vetting. This fee does not include the purchase of an appropriate, approved enclosure/housing, nutritious food, enrichment and/or toys.

  • You must live in the New England area and/or be able to commute to Foster Parrots for bonding visits prior to adoption.

You must be over the age of 21 and have a stable home situation that can accommodate a parrot.

Placement homes must be able to offer a high level of social support in the form of human and/or avian companionship.

Placement homes must have the ability to provide freedom/out-of-cage time. Homes capable of providing “environments” rather than cages and those accommodating flight will be prioritized.

  • You must live in the New England area or within a 100-mile radius of Foster Parrots

You must be over the age of 25 and have a stable home situation that can accommodate a parrot.

Birds placed through the home sanctuary program will be valued for their inherent value and not guardian/cultural expectations.

Must be willing to provide a home for birds who may be reactive/aggressive or unhandleable, in a space in which they are offered autonomy and are not confined to a cage.

Parrots shall not be promoted as “pets;” guardians must stand by Foster Parrots’ stance that wild animals should not be held in captivity.
